Specialization Course

Chess in Primary Education (3 ECTS)
2 – 6 July 2018, University Girona

The Summer School is the first international graduate course on teaching chess. It is part of a larger effort to establish education-oriented chess teaching. The course is also a means of getting high level feedback on the methods and materials of the CHAMPS project.
Leading scientists in educational chess are teaming up with experts from the CHAMPS for the most advanced training on teaching chess from an educational point of view. The week-long course provides scientific background on cognition, education and the didactics of mathematics and games, along with hands-on examples in order to apply chess to promoting mathematical, logic, reasoning and metacognitive skills in the classroom as well as skills to develop and evaluate your own materials.
Rather than prioritising the full game with 32 pieces and competition rules, it approaches chess as a multitude of mini games, variants, puzzles and activities on the chessboard. The focus has shifted from mastering the rules of chess to promoting mathematical, logical and meta-cognitive skills in students from an early age.

Do you aspire to improve chess teaching in your country?
The course is for school teachers or chess teachers who are training teachers. You should have at least two years' experience with chess in a school environment and expect to teach chess during the school year 2018/19. Even better, if you plan to train teachers and develop chess teaching materials. You should preferably hold a bachelor´s degree or higher in education, psychology, mathematics or another relevant field. Equipped with scientific background, methodological skills and excellent materials from the course, you will be prepared to lead the development, adaptation and dissemination of chess teaching methods and materials in your country.

Travel:
Girona is on the high velocity train line between Barcelona and Perpignan (France) and also has its own airport. Barcelona´s airport is about 90 minutes by bus away.

Girona has a splendid old town with many monuments from the middle ages, which you can visit during a guided tour on one of the first evenings.
